MacBook Battery Replacement: When It's Worth It

Battery anxiety is real, but not every aging MacBook needs a new battery. Here's how to tell.

MacBook batteries are rated for around 1,000 charge cycles before they're considered consumed. To check yours, hold Option, click the Apple menu, and pick System Information. Under Power, look at Cycle Count and Condition.

If the condition is Normal and cycles are under 800, your battery is fine. Slow runtime is more often caused by a runaway background process than a failing cell. Use Activity Monitor's Energy tab to find what's draining you.

Replacement is worth it when condition reads Service Recommended, the laptop swells, or runtime has dropped below an hour of light work. A swollen battery is a safety issue — stop using the machine and get it replaced.

I do on-site battery replacements for most MacBook models in Grass Valley and the surrounding foothills. Genuine cells, calibrated, and tested before I leave. After installation, I'll show you a few habits — like avoiding 100 percent overnight charging — that easily double the lifespan of the next one.
