How to Remove Mac Pop-ups and Fake Virus Warnings

If a website or notification says your Mac has 5 viruses, it doesn't. But you do have a problem.

Real Apple software never pops up urgent warnings asking you to call a phone number or download a tool. Every one of those is a scam, and many install browser extensions or adware that follow you around the web.

Start in your browser. In Safari, go to Settings, Extensions, and remove anything you don't recognize. In Chrome, do the same under Extensions. Reset your homepage and search engine if they look unfamiliar.

Next, check Login Items and Profiles in System Settings. Profiles especially — legitimate Macs almost never have configuration profiles installed unless your workplace put them there. Remove unfamiliar ones.

Run Malwarebytes for Mac, free version, one scan. It's the most reliable cleanup tool I use. If pop-ups persist or your browser still redirects, you may have a launch agent or daemon installed deeper in the system. That's a job for someone who knows where to look — and yes, I do these cleanups in person across Nevada County.
