iCloud Storage Full? Smart Ways to Free Space

Most people don't actually need more iCloud storage. They just need to clean up what's there.

iCloud fills up quietly. Old device backups, screenshot junk, gigabytes of forwarded videos in Messages, and apps you stopped using years ago. Before upgrading your plan, prune.

On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, Manage Account Storage. You'll see exactly what's eating space. Old iPhone backups are the usual culprit — delete any from devices you no longer own.

Messages with attachments can hide tens of gigabytes. In Settings, General, iPhone Storage, tap Messages and review large attachments. Same for Mail — clean out the giant attachments folder.

Photos is trickier. If you turn off iCloud Photos to save space, do it carefully or you'll lose originals. I help clients migrate photos to a local Mac library plus an external SSD before touching iCloud settings. It's a 30-minute house call that often saves $30 a month forever.
