Setting Up Family Sharing Without Confusion
Family Sharing is wonderful when it's set up right. When it isn't, it makes everyone miserable.
The first rule: every person gets their own Apple ID. Sharing a single Apple ID across a family causes years of pain — everyone sees everyone else's messages, photos, and contacts. It's not how Apple intends the system to work.
Pick one adult as the Family Organizer. They share the iCloud storage plan, Apple Music, Apple TV+, and any apps that support family sharing. Everyone keeps their own data, just shares the subscriptions.
For kids under 13, create a child Apple ID inside Family Sharing. You get Ask to Buy, Screen Time controls, and location sharing. Don't lie about a kid's birthday to give them an adult account — it removes every parental control Apple offers.
Most family setups I do take about an hour in person. We straighten out who is signed in to what, untangle the duplicates, and you walk away with everyone on a clean, separate Apple ID under one shared roof.
